Citic Group ‒ China’s biggest state- owned investment company ‒ and its partners have agreed to buy Gold One International Limited (GDO) for about US$469 million, gaining gold assets in South Africa.

The group is offering 55 cents a Gold One share, 28% more than its  12May closing price, the Sydney-based company said here in a statement.

China Development Bank Corporation and Long March Capital Group are the other members of the bidding group, which is seeking as much as a 75% stake, and plans to keep the company trading in Australia and South Africa, with a potential listing in Hong Kong. Gold One has climbed 16% in Sydney trading.

“The deal gives us a great partner and ready access to their capital to grow,” Gold One chairman Mark Wheatley said in a phone interview. “Staying listed will also make it easier to raise future capital.”Gold One operates the Modder East mine in South Africa, and also has projects in Mozambique and Namibia. Gold reached a record this month, boosting takeovers in the industry with US$10.6 billion worth this quarter, the most since the third quarter last year, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Gold One, whose board recommended the offer, climbed seven cents to 50 cents at the 4:10 p.m. market close in Sydney. The company said in March that it was in talks over deals including a change in control. It agreed in April to buy Rand Uranium Limited, a South African gold producer with uranium assets, for US$250 million.

West Africa focused Bellzone Mining has released an initial resource estimate for its Kalia iron ore project in Guinea.

The AIM-listed iron ore and nickel company announced an initial inferred JORC oxide resource of 111 million tonnes, graded at 38% Fe, which would be beneficiated using a standard gravity process to produce 58% Fe fines. The technical report says Bellzone has mapped 55 square kilometres of surface oxide material, with exploration focused on a 2.3 square kilometre area located above the 3.74 billion tonne magnetite  resource.

It plans to mine 250 million tonnes of iron ore oxide throughout a 10-year minelife. According to a report in Mining Weekly earlier this month, Bellzone has finalized its feasibility study and plan to begin construction on the mine by the middle of this year.

Africa’s biggest gold miner AngloGold Ashanti  reported a return to profit in the first quarter on Wednesday following its hedge-book buy back and said it expects higher output in the current three months.

AngloGold said adjusted headline earnings per share for the January-March quarter were 53 U.S. cents compared to a loss of 199 cents in the previous one after it had eliminated its hedge book last year to reap the full benefit of record gold prices.

“The business is generating strong, steady cash flow now that we’re capturing this higher gold price,” Chief Executive Officer Mark Cutifani said in a statement.

The company said it had produced 1.039 million ounces of gold in the quarter, down from 1.148 million ounces in the previous three months. Total cash costs were at at $706 per ounce, up from $672 in the previous quarter.

AngloGold said strong performances in its operations elsewhere in Africa and in the Americas helped it regain some of the 20,000 ounces of production lost due to unprecedented rainfall at its Sunrise Dam mine in Australia.

First-quarter uranium output stood at 365,000 pounds.

The stage has been set for the next phase in Zimbabwe’s black ownership saga, with Impala Platinum Holdings Limited ‒ the world’s second largest platinum producer ‒ having submitted its proposals on the government’s new indigenisation law.The new Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment Act instructs all companies worth more than US$500 000 operating in the country to arrange for 51% of their shares or interests to be owned by indigenous Zimbabweans.

Foreign-owned mining companies operating in Zimbabwe have made their objections to this percentage clear, and are proposing various alternatives as a compromise.

Impala Platinum’s proposals were submitted to the Zimbabwean committee driving the laws, said company spokesman Bob Gilmour here on his mobile phone. “It’s based on the three pillars of equity. We await a response.”

Brazilian mining giant Vale opened a new US$1.7 billion coal mine in Mozambique yesterday, tapping the southern African country’s thermal and coking coal reserves of about 23 billion tonnes.

Vale plans to start production in July and export 1 million tonnes of coal from the US$1.7 billion project this year, ramping up production to 11 million tonnes in a few years — and, local officials hope, boosting Mozambique’s current economic growth of 6.5 percent.

“There’s a very low probability that Exxaro will develop the assets,” finance director Wim de Klerk said here in an e-mailed reply to questions. The sale will allow the Pretoria-based company to focus on other projects, he wrote.Exxaro called for expressions of interest in the assets, including Arnot South, Kranspan and Vaalbult in Mpumalanga province, the nation’s biggest coal region. The company plans to boost capital spending on coal and mineral sands projects threefold to US$1.2 billion this year.

Exxaro produced 47 million tons of coal last year, according to its website.

The company has a healthy project pipeline which includes coal and various energy investments.
Analysts said the Exarro might be following the example of other peers, looking for ways to finance their more lucrative projects.

“Exxaro is following companies in the United States that are selling off non-core assets to raise funds and concentrate on their core assets, which is always a wise move,” said one analyst who preferred not to be named.

Optimum Coal CEO, Mike Teke said the company had targeted these reserves for some time.
“The TNC prospecting rights will provide us with a critical, high-value export life extension at Koornfontein Mines, thereby unlocking the currently under-utilised infrastructure and maximising value for the 1.5Mtpa Richards Bay coal terminal entitlement owned by Koornfontein Mines,” Teke said.

He added that the company had more flexibility to explore options to potentially provide the lower-quality four seam coal at Koornfontein Mines to Eskom.

The acquisition is subject only to regulatory consent from the Department of Mineral Resources for the renewal and transfer of ownership of the prospecting rights to Optimum Coal. The effective date of the transaction will be upon the fulfilment of these conditions precedent, which is expected to occur no later than mid-November.
